Harmonica Playing FAQs

Harmonica CDs: Country and Bluegrass

-Recommended For Beginning Players- This follows a CD description when the CD contains at least a few songs on it that can be played along with on a standard key of "C" diatonic (commonly played in the 2nd position in the key of "G"). We also recommend the CD for beginners if the harmonica played on it will be good for "ear-training", that is, simple so the new player can begin to copy some of the riffs, sounds, and techniques found on it. Any of these CDs would be a good introduction to harmonica playing.

Black, Clint- "Killin' Time"- "When this debut album came out in 1989, Clint Black was poised to be bigger than contemporaneous debut artist Garth Brooks. It didn't happen--Garth had friends in low places. Black is one of contemporary country's consummate artists. Killin' Time shows he had the complete package from the start." Black, Clint- "No Time To Kill"- "After an acrimonious legal battle with his former manager and an ill-advised move toward adult-contemporary pop threatened to sink his career, Clint Black has righted himself on the delightful No Time To Kill. This outing returns Black to the modern Texas honky- tonk that made 1989's Killin' Time one of the best debut albums of that decade." Brooks, Garth- "No Fences"- "No Fences captures Garth Brooks just after his initial success yet before superstardom. Though it includes "The Thunder Rolls," another of the pop-country power ballads he'd introduced with "The Dance," No Fences bounces mainly between impersonations--often catchy and engaging ones, but impersonations nonetheless. "Wild Horses" is straight-up George Strait, while "Two of a Kind" and "Friends in Low Places" are John Anderson and Hank Jr. respectively." Brooks, Garth- "Scarecrow"- "Nearly a decade ago, Garth Brooks's ability to incorporate '70s pop material and arena rock into his act made history (and controversy) as he propelled country to its pinnacle of success. One fact remains in 2001. When he simply rears back and sings (in the spirit of longtime pal Chris LeDoux), the results are often fresh and natural. That's the case on the Beatle-esque "Wrapped Up in You," "Thicker Than Blood," and the trite but catchy blue-collar bopper "Big Money." While duets with George Jones and Trisha Yearwood have merit, one wonders who really needs who." Buy Norton Buffalo, Roy Rogers CD
Check price or purchase
Buffalo, Norton, & Rogers, Roy- "Roots of Our Nature"- "As quintessentially American as corn on the cob or the rodeo, the blues-streaked music created here by slide guitarist Roy Rogers and harmonica player Norton Buffalo marks their first studio collaboration since two early-'90s releases. Buffalo, a longtime Steve Miller Band member, and Rogers, who has played with Bonnie Raitt and John Lee Hooker, are so musically in synch that all 13 of their original songs on this CD serve as engaging testimonials to their friendship. Each West Coaster is a virtuoso on his instrument, but neither engages in showiness. Instead, their phrases combine in low-key expressions of faith, longing, struggle, and triumph. Rogers and Norton aren't outstanding singers, yet they get by without disrupting the special guitar-harp rapport at the crux of the music. Buffalo does deliver his all-time best studio vocal on "If I Were a King."

Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - "Will the Circle Be Unbroken (30th Anniversary Edition) [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED]"- This triple album (now rereleased as a two-CD set) paired many of Nashville's venerable country and bluegrass performers (Roy Acuff, Mother Maybelle Carter, Earl Scruggs, Doc Watson, Merle Travis, Jimmy Martin, Vassar Clements) with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, or as Acuff called them, "a bunch of long-haired West Coast boys." Aside from the sheer joy of the performances (listen to Jimmy Martin's "whoop" on "Sunny Side of the Mountain"), there's great fun in hearing Roy Acuff give the boys a lesson in doing a song right the first time (and using the word hell before launching into a religious number).
