Harmonica Playing FAQs

Harmonica CDs: Rock

-Recommended For Beginning Players- This follows a CD description when the CD contains at least a few songs on it that can be played along with on a standard key of "C" diatonic (commonly played in the 2nd position in the key of "G"). We also recommend the CD for beginners if the harmonica played on it will be good for "ear-training", that is, simple so the new player can begin to copy some of the riffs, sounds, and techniques found on it. Any of these CDs would be a good introduction to harmonica playing.

Norton Buffalo - King of the Highway
Check price or purchase
Buffalo, Norton- "King of the Highway"- "Why all the fuss about young, up-and-coming blues stars when the ones who've been honing their chops for years are often so much better at their craft? It's a question to ponder when listening to Norton Buffalo's first solo recording in 20 years. Since that last outing, he's been a featured harmonica player with the Steve Miller band, and the years have served him well. It's not just Buffalo's execution, which is flawless, or the fact that he's a more-than-competent vocalist, or that years of collaboration have afforded him a guest-star lineup that includes Miller and guitarist Elvin Bishop. It's also that Buffalo's capable of swinging through multiple blues-oriented styles with the greatest of ease, whether he's moaning out the heartfelt ballad "I Know I'm Fallin'," serving up tasty blues-rock with "Is It Love," going all Texas with "Let Me Be Your Man," or getting jazzy with "Hoodoo Roux." A potpourri of styles has become de rigueur in contemporary blues, but few manage it with as much aplomb as does Norton Buffalo."
Norton Buffalo, Roy Rogers
Check price or purchase
Buffalo, Norton, & Rogers, Roy- "Roots of Our Nature"- "As quintessentially American as corn on the cob or the rodeo, the blues-streaked music created here by slide guitarist Roy Rogers and harmonica player Norton Buffalo marks their first studio collaboration since two early-'90s releases. Buffalo, a longtime Steve Miller Band member, and Rogers, who has played with Bonnie Raitt and John Lee Hooker, are so musically in synch that all 13 of their original songs on this CD serve as engaging testimonials to their friendship. Each West Coaster is a virtuoso on his instrument, but neither engages in showiness. Instead, their phrases combine in low-key expressions of faith, longing, struggle, and triumph. Rogers and Norton aren't outstanding singers, yet they get by without disrupting the special guitar-harp rapport at the crux of the music. Buffalo does deliver his all-time best studio vocal on "If I Were a King."
Jimmy Buffett Live

Carlos del Junco- "Blues Mongrel"- Harpist Carlos del Junco accentuates carefully placed golden melodies and lounge-tenor vocals that will give his southern American bandleader counterparts a listening ear. As a harmonica player, del Junco has a wonderful understanding of traditional music styles. His knowledge of Latin rhythms and percussion leads to abrupt stops and key changes mid-tune, and he has been known to "split" his harmonica at times during solos. This record is recommended for fans of Rod Piazza, and the James Harman Band. The songs on this album have been "keyed" for you in the CDs: Song Keys section at Harmonica Lessons.com.
