Please note that the high-impedance cable to plug this mic directly into your amp must be purchased separately.
Buy Shure SM58 Mic

Shure SM58s w/on-off switch- "The undisputed world standard for stage microphones. Legendary for its uncanny ability to withstand abuse that would destroy any other mic. World-renowned for its distinctive upper-midrange presence peak that ensures an intelligible, lively sound." Our thoughts: A great low-impedance vocal mic that will also give you a "clean" harmonica sound on stage when going directly into the PA system. The on-off switch allows you to instantly cut off feedback. Mic cable may not be included.

You can get additional amp models, cabinet emulations, and effects parameters, plus mix-and-match amps and cabs, and you can do strange things with the wah functions and other fun stuff. Our thoughts: Based on personal recommendations and Message Boards posts (Throw away your amps-try the "Pod") in the last year, we include "Pod" as an alternative to a standard mic/amp combination to get a rocking-blues sound in the studio or "live" directly through the PA system. (you still need to supply your own high-impedance mic or harmonica pickup).

Buy Hohner Special 20
Click for price or purchase
  Recommended by Harmonica Lessons.com
Hohner Special 20- This is our favorite Hohner diatonic for price and quality. This model is "Just Intonation" tuned so that your chord playing sounds a bit smoother and richer. Be sure to use the pulldown menu to select the key of "C" if you are just starting out. See bottom of this page for "Low-tuned" Special 20's.

Buy Dylan song book
Check price or purchase
Bob Dylan for Harmonica- (Song Book) "Thirty all-time great songs by Bob Dylan arranged for harmonica. As you go through the book, the music is progressively more challenging." Our thoughts: You should note that this book only has the melodies to his songs and does not include the tab for his solos and harmonica parts.
Buy Korg tuner
Check price or purchase
Korg CA-30 Chromatic Tuner- "This compact little chromatic tuner has calibration, auto, and manual modes. It features a built in mic, sharp/flat/in tune LEDs, note and frequency displays. Great for harmonicas, guitars, horns, keyboards . . . anything." Our thoughts: For you advanced crazies that actually want to tune or re-tune your harmonicas. Not all electronic tuners "hear" harmonica notes well, this one does. Also, a great aid in learning how to bend- watch to see how much the note drops in pitch.
Buy Harmonicas, Harps and Heavy Breathers Harmonicas, Harps and Heavy Breathers- "More than a million harmonicas are sold in the U.S. every year. Here is the first book to explore the history of this inexpensive and extraordinarily versatile instrument and the techniques and unique styles of individual players from Larry Adler to Stevie Wonder. 35 photos." Our thoughts: Not really an instruction book, but you'll learn a lot about the history of the harmonica and it's players. By Kim Fields.
Hohner HH-154 Harmonica Holder
Check price or purchase
Hohner Harmonica Holder (HH-154)- Harmonica holder for all the guitar/harmonica playing singers out there (a la Bob Dylan and Neil Young). Spring loaded holder for fast harmonica changes. For harmonicas up to 7.5 inches long. Very sturdy. Our Thoughts: This is designed for harmonicas larger than a standard diatonic. If you try to use one of these with a regular diatonic, you may not have much luck. They don't fit very well or stay in place. It is fine if you play the 14 hole diatonics or tremolo varieties.

Traditionally called the "Little Lady", this one octave mini-harmonica has a complete 4-hole octave so you can play the major scale and many 1st position melodies. We don't recommend that you bathe with it.

Buy Lee Oskar harmonica

  Recommended by Harmonica Lessons.com
The Lee Oskar Major Diatonic- "Our No. 1 recommendation. The serious beginner can't go wrong with the standard Lee Oskar major diatonic in the key of "C". It is a bit more expensive than some of the other brands, but worth the price for it's consistent volume, tone, and durability. It's airtightness makes it easier to learn to bend on. Be sure to use the pulldown menu to select the key of "C" if you are just starting out. The Lee Oskar harmonicas also feature the 1st position and 2nd position keys printed on the ends of each diatonic for easy reference. You can also order Lee Oskar Replacement Reed Plates when the reeds go bad."

Buy Lee Oskar harmonica

The Lee Oskar "Natural Minor" Diatonic- Don't be confused. This is not a standard tuned diatonic and it is not what we recommend for beginners. This is a special purpose harmonica. The "Natural Minor" tuned diatonic is made specifically to be played in the 2nd position and is used for songs in minor keys. It's a little confusing, but the key of the harmonica is the key for the 2nd position playing. Typically, the key of the harmonica is the same as the 1st position playing, but not in this case (same as the "Melody Maker" listed below). The most common minor key used in music is "A" minor. This is most likely the key you would want to buy first. After that, if there is a specific song you want to play to, buy that Natural Minor keyed harmonica. Remember to play in the 2nd position.
Buy Little Walter tabs

Sourcebook of Little Walter/Big Walter Licks for Blues Harmonica (book/CD)- "In this essential collection for blues harp players, author Tom Ball sets out to discuss, understand and demystify some of the playing of the phenomenal Walters: the legendary 'Big Walter' Horton and 'Little Walter' Jacobs. Includes a sampling of the best licks from each artist's repertoire, mapped out in easy-to-read harmonica tablature and played on CD by Ball."
Buy card metronome
Check price or purchase
Korg MA-30 Digital Metronome- "The Korg MA-30 Digital Metronome is the most useful metronome ever in this price range. Duplets, triplets, and quadruplets with inner beats omitted, and more make playing along interesting and more realistic than a click track. Features a highly visible liquid crystal pendulum, 12 reference pitches, adjustable calibration, adjustable volume, tap tempo, earphone jack, and memory backup. The Korg MA-30 Digital Metronome has a 250 hour battery life."
Lee Oskar Repair Kit
Check price or purchase
  Recommended by Harmonica Lessons.com
Lee Oskar Repair and Maintenance Kit- Harmonica maintenance is an important part of harmonica playing. Now, when a reed sticks, you'll have easy, accessible tools and procedures for getting it playing just right. Whether you are adjusting the "gap" of the reeds to make your harmonica "stick" less, or whether you are retuning reeds to get them in tune with each other (see the Korg CA-30 Chromatic Tuner also on this page), or even creating your own "alternate tuned" harmonica, the Lee Oskar 7-piece tool kit and 16-page illustrated manual is the way to go. This kit will also work with all Hohner diatonic and chromatic harmonicas (although you may need a small flathead screwdriver in addition to the Phillips head screwdriver included in the kit).
